Lipton tries to keep CNY ties alive
By Mark Bialczak Music Critic
Jack “Penetrator” Lipton won’t cut his Central New York ties.
The singer and songwriter began his career with the Penetrators in Syracuse in 1976.
Lipton lives in Massachusetts now.
But his new solo disc, “Bad-boy,” bursts with the kind of gritty rock that used to fill Salt City clubs back then.
Lipton enlisted the help of old Central New York friends Mark Doyle, Paul Armstrong and Ducky Carlyle, to name a few.
The guests help the two original pieces of the four-song set sound like they slid open the door unannounced, grabbed a beverage from the fridge, and made themselves feel right at home.
“Trouble” has the grit and gnash of early Springsteen or Mellencamp.
“Get Off That Corner” contains the lines, “When I was a bit younger, I used to work on the south side of Syracuse. I saw my share of pain and despair there. It was the corner you did not walk if you didn’t want your —— to get kicked.”
He tells the working girls to go do something constructive.
But you just know a guy who has this much fun with rock — the feverish cover of Iggy Pop’s “Search and Destroy” and blues version of the goodie “Dirty Water” prove that — wants them to keep some sass in their walk, too.
